If you’ve never attended the CONEXPO/IFPE shows, let me tell you something—they’re enormous. How big are they? Well, they spread across pretty much the entire Las Vegas Convention Center (which is pretty gargantuan to begin with) and then they spill outside onto the various parking lots, where large machinery is positioned shoulder to shoulder—and hundreds of cranes reach toward the sky. More than 130,000 visitors attend these shows, and there are on the order of 2,400 exhibitors, including companies that specialize in the asphalt, aggregates, concrete, earthmoving, lifting, mining, and utilities fields.
So with a mere 288 days left until the show opening—trust me, it’s going to go fast!—it’s incredible to hear that the venue will be getting even BIGGER in 2017. The Las Vegas Convention Authority, which purchased the old Riviera hotel property, has been in the process of tearing down the outdated resort, which runs from then edge of the Convention Center property all the way to the Strip. The first step of demolition happened earlier this month, when crews tore down a large parking garage. This opens up more outdoor space in the future, and CONEXPO will be the first show to use this area next year, which will become an extension of the current Gold Lot.
So, while I’m looking forward to seeing you all next March 7-11, I’ve got to work on getting some new walking shoes for all those miles I’ll be burning up in the expanded outdoor lots!
