This month’s CCEFP webinar highlighting graduate students performing research within the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power is slated for tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 12 p.m. Central. Presented by the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power and sponsored by the NFPA, the webinar is geared towards individuals in the industry and academic community of fluid power technology, investigation and innovation.

The topics include:

Efficient, Integrated, Freeform Flexible Hydraulic Actuators, Presented by Jonathon Slightam, Marquette University. This project is set to advance current hydraulic actuator technology by focusing on the use of flexible fluidic actuators and the additive manufacturing methods needed to produce them. It will differentiate itself from existing actuation technologies most prominently through the dramatic reduction in component and system weight that comes with producing this new actuation technology via advanced manufacturing methods, opening up many new applications to fluid power solutions.

Slightam received his B.S. and M.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering and engineering from MSOE in 2012 and 2014, respectively. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Marquette University. His current research and research interest is additively manufactured fluid power robotics and mobile robots.

AC Hydraulic Pump/Motor, Presented by Mengtang Li (Vanderbilt University) and Ryan Foss (University of Minnesota). Hydraulic systems today can best be classified as DC, or direct flow, hydraulics. This project will investigate the modeling, design, and development of AC hydraulic systems. This project will build upon the existing CCEFP variable linkage piston pump that is both compact and efficient even under low displacement operating conditions. It will also greatly expand the existing body of knowledge for applying existing variable displacement pumps to alternating flow AC hydraulic circuits, including multi-actuator systems.

Mengtang and Ryan are both PhD students in mechanical engineering.

Advance and individual registration is required to participate. Register here.

Are hydrogen fuel cells the future for mobile machines? Prioritizing decarbonization is, without doubt, one that most countries agree with almost pure unanimity. Here, in the U.S., the Biden administration has a goal to eliminate carbons from the electric grid system by 2035. Globally, most countries are on similar timelines. But, looking ahead to 2050,…
