A note from the editor
Your Fluid Power World Handbook issue is all new this year, with a revamp of articles into a series called “Designer’s Guides,” where we give in-depth tutorials on how to specify key fluid power systems. Complete with math and critical sizing formulas, these articles provide all the information you need to size, select and design many prime movers in the fluid power system.
The articles walk readers through the core components of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The issue opens with practical, application-focused coverage of fittings and adapters, cylinders, hydraulic pumps, and hydraulic motors, offering engineers clear guidance on selection, sizing, materials, standards, and performance tradeoffs. The designer’s guide series continues with a look at pneumatic cylinders and hose assemblies, addressing both mechanical considerations and system-level impacts such as efficiency, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Together, these articles form a foundational toolkit for engineers designing or refining fluid power systems across mobile and industrial applications.
Rounding out the issue, the Engineering Basics section dives into two critical system topics: filtration and contamination control, and hydraulic valves. These articles revisit essential principles while addressing modern challenges such as higher operating pressures, tighter tolerances, and the growing need for system reliability and longevity. With its strong emphasis on fundamentals, best practices, and real-world design considerations, this issue provides readers with both a refresher on the essentials and a practical resource they can return to throughout the design process.
