Extended Thorx cam lob motors designed for track-driven machinery

Danfoss Power Solutions launch its Thorx CLM 12 T cam lobe motor at bauma last week. Designed for construction machinery with rubber track drives, such as compact track loaders, the motor joins the CLM 8 S and CLM 4 S motors for skid steer loaders in the Thorx lineup. The CLM 12 T motor offers easier machine integration, a longer lifetime, and improved two-speed and parking brake technology compared to other cam lobe motors on the market.

The CLM 12 T motor features an easy-to-fit symmetric design that enables better space utilization and easier installation. The rotating flange is located at the center of the CLM 12 T, allowing the motor to make full use of the track width and reducing the space claim at the rear of the motor. On other cam lobe motors, the rotating flange is located towards the front end, which means the motor does not fit completely inside the track and juts into the frame of the machine, requiring cutouts and stiffening.

The robust, novel design of the CLM 12 T extends the life of the motor and its bearings. The motor’s rotary group features 12 pistons and nine lobes, compared to eight or nine pistons and six lobes on competitive products. The greater number of pistons reduces contact stress on the cam, increasing motor life.

Two substantial taper roller bearings located near the rotating flange minimize bending load, reducing stress and extending bearing life. The bearings are lubricated by flushed motor oil to maintain cleanliness, also maximizing lifetime.

The CLM 12 T motor features the same improved two-speed technology as the CLM S motors, which reduces shock at speed changeover by 70% compared to other cam lobe motors. The technology delivers smoother speed shifts with a consistent, quick response time, even at low temperatures, resulting in superior machine handling and better operator comfort.

Like the CLM S motors, the CLM 12 T motor features an integral parking brake situated at the center of the motor, maintaining a compact envelope. The durable spring-applied multi-disc brake provides safe and reliable emergency braking functionality. It is designed to withstand at least 100 dynamic stops during the machine’s lifetime.

“Compact track loaders generally use cam lobe motors or axial piston motors combined with a gearbox for the track drive. Each solution has its advantages, but cam lobe motors have traditionally fallen short in terms of installation ease and bearing lifetime. Our CLM 12 T improves the cam lobe offering in these areas while retaining the advantage of high-speed efficiency,” said Chris Shrive, Head of Cam Lobe Motors, Danfoss Power Solutions. “With our Thorx cam lobe motors and axial piston motors, Danfoss can offer customers the ideal solution for their machines without compromising on the technology.”

The CLM 12 T motor’s duo cone shaft seal prevents dirt ingress while its high-performance materials provide wear and corrosion protection. The seal’s lubrication can be drained and replaced from the outside of the vehicle without removing the sprocket, simplifying maintenance.
