Hallite 668 twin lip static seal helps boost hydraulic cylinder performance and efficiency

At this year’s CONEXPO, Hallite presented its 668 twin lip static seal, designed to maximize seal functionality and high groove stability. It is molded in Hythane 333, one of Hallite’s high-performance polyurethanes, providing easy installation and excellent low temperature performance.

“The expansion in the 668 seal range, to include imperial and metric ISO grooves, comes from development in process upgrades,” said Andrew Iddeson, Group Technology Director.

The Hallite 668 twin lip static seal is designed to seal the static joint between the assemblies of the gland and the cylinder bore or between the rod and the piston. The sealing element is a very effective single piece replacement for the conventional O-ring and back-up ring combination in a wide range of duties and applications. The main advantages are its multiple sealing lips and high groove stability compared to a conventional O-ring, reducing fluid transfer caused by pumping.

“In a typical hydraulic cylinder, the rod to piston assembly, or the gland to cylinder bore would have a static seal in it. In many cases this would be an O-ring, and it would normally have an anti-extrusion ring behind it. The 668 replaces these two or three components with a single solution providing seal confidence with a dual-lipped seal. It’s manufactured in a high performance Hythane compound as well, ensuring extrusion resistance when compared to an elastomer O-ring,” Iddeson said.

“Whilst providing a robust and highly capable seal function, the benefit in operational efficiency is invaluable,” Iddeson said. “You have less potential for points of failure, with just one seal instead of multiple components, where it may be possible to assemble the multiple parts incorrectly. It also reduces inventory management of multiple SKU.

The growth in Hallite’s operational capabilities has allowed us to develop the methods and processes to expand the offer in the 668.”
