SMC Corp. of America, Noblesville, Ind. has expanded its family of compressed air preparation filters. The AFF/AM/AMD Series filter line features additional sizes, as well as units that are smaller, lighter and more efficient than previous versions.
The extended product offerings include AFF Series line filters, AM Series Mist Separators, and AMD Series Micro Mist Separators. Previously, the AFF/AM/AMD Series was limited to Size 30 units with a flow capacity of 750 l/min. New Size 20 (300 l/min) and Size 40 models (1,500 l/min) have greatly expanded the product range.
The AFF Series line filter removes both solid particles and water droplets. Nominal filtration rating is 1 μm (filtration efficiency = 99%) and water droplet removal ratio is 99%. Because it eliminates the need for an additional water separator, the AFF is said to reduce the required installation space and piping work.
The element end cap has built-in slits where condensate readily discharges and prevents the accumulation of condensation — no water flows to the downstream side. Even high-velocity fluid is not spattered, and results in a compact bowl design.
The AM Series Mist Separator provides fine dust filtration and oil mist separation. Nominal filtration rating is 0.1 μm. Oil mist density at outlet is a maximum 1.0 mg/m3, or approximately 0.8 ppm.
The AMD Series Micro Mist Separator offers ultra-fine particulate filtration and oil mist separation. Nominal filtration is 0.01 μm with filtration efficiency of 99.9%. Oil mist density at the device’s outlet is a maximum 0.1 mg/m3, or approximately 0.08 ppm.
The products can be used as standalone filters as needed, or combined into a single unit via a space-saving modular connection for applications that demand suitably dry and extremely clean compressed air.
AFF/AM/AMD filter-separators are compliant with the ISO 8573 Compressed Air Purity Class ratings. This system designates the degree of purity of compressed air being supplied to downstream devices and equipment. The AFF line filter is rated at purity class 4:7:4 for particles/liquid water/oil; the AM Mist Separator is 2:7:3; and the AMD Micro Mist Separator is rated 1:7:2.
Thanks to a new design, the products have a lower pressure drop, which contributes to energy savings and increases flow and line capacity by up to 50%. The latest units also weigh up to 50% less than previous versions, and have face-to-face and depth dimensions reduced by as much as 30%.
Among other features, the bowl guard and inner bowl are made of transparent polycarbonate for easy visual inspection. Metal and nylon bowls are also available. Various manual and automatic drains can be specified to control discharge. No tools are required to replace the filter element, which can be done by hand. And ports include 0.12, 0.25, 0.38 and 0.5 in. sizes in several thread styles. Ambient and fluid temperature ratings of the products range from -5° to 60° C (23° to 140° F). Minimum and maximum operating pressures are 0.05 to 1.0 MPa (7.25 to 145 psi).
