Rod locks are crucial safety devices for hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders — they are designed to automatically clamp a cylinder to hold a load safely in case of power loss. They are designed to hold loads of hundreds up to millions of pounds.

Advanced Machine & Engineering Co. (AME) manufactures both pneumatic and hydraulic rod locks, but has now just launched its RCHX Exclusion series design, a hydraulically actuated solution engineered to perform in the most demanding conditions, including submersible applications. It builds upon the company’s AMLOK RCH Rod Lock platform, by incorporating enhanced features to meet the challenges of harsh environments:

  • Rugged construction: Heavy-duty steel housing ensures durability under severe operating conditions.
  • Versatile mounting: Through-hole design compatible with standard NFPA cylinder mounts and stand-alone configurations.
  • Bidirectional holding force: Maintains equal clamping force in both directions for consistent performance.
  • Precision engagement: Eliminates rod displacement upon activation, ensuring accurate positioning.
  • Oil-filled housing: Provides superior lubrication and protection against contaminants, extending service life.

Suitable for industries such as marine, mining, and oil and gas, the RCHX Exclusion series rod lock offers a reliable solution for applications where safety and equipment integrity are paramount.

A note from the editor In our October issue of Fluid Power World, my commentary takes a look at the growing role of automation and sensors in mobile machinery, where OEMs are increasingly focused on automating specific functions and improving machine performance rather than chasing fully autonomous equipment. Josh Cosford gets cheeky comparing the auto…
