A pumps can be chosen by looking at the datasheets of the particular pumps that you’re looking for. This is a case where the same reasons you would choose a pump based on creating a low amount of suction or if you have conditions that have poor inlet conditions, those are the same kinds of pumps that you would choose for a high viscosity as well. It’s really the same effect.
For high viscosity pumps, if you look in the datasheet for a particular pump, it will give you the acceptable viscosity range—or sometimes the acceptable inlet pressure required for a pump. These can be related to the pump speed, viscosity, temperature and other factors.
The best thing to do is check with the datasheet of the pump that you’re using or find a pump that has those best characteristics for the system that you’re designing.
