Bailey previews software-defined force feedback joystick capability

At iVT in August, Bailey International previewed an interactive force feedback joystick prototype that explores a new approach to operator controls: changing how a joystick feels and responds through software.

Previewed at the 2026 iVT Off-Highway Expo, the prototype demonstrates adjustable force resistance, centering feel, virtual gates and detents, and haptic cues. These settings can create different control experiences on a single hardware platform without changing mechanical springs or gates.

“As machines become more electronically controlled, the feel of the controls becomes a design choice,” said Darren Lockyer, VP of Electronics at Bailey. “We’re exploring how to give OEMs more flexibility to tailor that feel to the machine, the task and the operator.”

The current demonstrator lets visitors experience several concepts, including variable joystick resistance, software-defined gates and detents, tactile alerts, and guided control. With further development and appropriate machine integration, these capabilities could help operators receive information through the control itself and allow OEMs to configure different responses for machine modes or attachments.

The joystick is a development prototype, not a product available for purchase. Bailey is continuing to iterate on the technology and is seeking conversations with OEMs about the control challenges and applications that should guide its development.

“We see real potential to improve operator experience, efficiency and safety while simplifying product configuration and supply chains,” added Nicholas Whyte, New Product Development Manager at Bailey. “We’re looking for OEM partners to help us test and validate where this technology can deliver the most value.”

The work is part of Bailey’s broader exploration of electrohydraulic controls. OEMs interested in discussing potential applications can contact Bailey at baileyintl.com/contact.

A note from the editor In our October issue of Fluid Power World, my commentary takes a look at the growing role of automation and sensors in mobile machinery, where OEMs are increasingly focused on automating specific functions and improving machine performance rather than chasing fully autonomous equipment.
